Defining Social Justice Report

A Duke University Student-Run Think Tank. Founded in 2019, the American Futures Institute (AFI) is a student-led policy think tank and consulting group based out of Duke University. We offer pro-bono research and consulting services to legislators, businesses, and nonprofits. Our goal is to work with each of our clients to determine what specialized projects would be most helpful for their specific needs and desires.
As a student lead organization, AFI seeks to introduce the next generation of policymakers and civic leaders to data-driven policy that solves problems and improves lives. Our members undergo training through student-led research projects prior to working hands-on to solve real world public policy problems.

For the purposes of this report, “social justice” will be viewed through the lens of equality and will specifically focus on LGBTQIA+ populations. The less-developed nations considered in this report are the “Least Developed Countries” or “LDCs” as defined by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The majority of those countries are either in Africa or Asia.
Due to the relative cultural similarities between countries within the same continent, this report divides research and analysis into two sections: Asian and African LDCs. Within each section, this report will lay out the root causes of LGBTQIA+ discrimination, relevant legal definitions, how the people in each area define and interpret social justice, and the current status of social justice, which describes the current treatment and conditions experienced by LGBTQIA+ populations.
InterPride and the American Futures Institute (AFI), a student led group from Duke University, are proud to present Defining Social Justice: Africa and Asia Edition. The students from Duke will provide an overview of this research and showcase the importance of understanding Social Justice in different parts of the world.
